What Cyprus Pulse is

Cyprus Pulse is an independent, English-language news and information publication based in Nicosia. We write explainers, guides and analysis about life in Cyprus: how the state works, how the economy earns, what housing costs, where the island rewards a visitor's curiosity, and how its digital future is taking shape. We are a new publication and a deliberately distinct one: we are not affiliated with, and should not be confused with, any other Cypriot media outlet, in any language.

Our premise is simple. English is the working second language of Cyprus, spoken in its courtrooms, boardrooms, clinics and lecture halls, and the island is home to a large community of residents, professionals and students who live their lives partly or wholly in it. That community deserves more than translated press releases and expat forum folklore. It deserves reporting that starts from the question a reader actually has, "how does this work, and what does it mean for me?", and answers it carefully.

We are explainer-first by choice. Breaking news is well served in Cyprus; understanding is scarcer. You will therefore find few sirens on this site and many guides: to the tax system, the Green Line, the rental contract, the meze table. When news breaks, our instinct is to publish the piece that makes sense of it rather than the fastest headline.

Editorial standards

Every article on Cyprus Pulse is originally written for this site. We do not republish, scrape or lightly rewrite the work of other outlets, and we do not use another publication's reporting without naming it. Where our understanding rests on public sources, laws, regulators' registers, official statistics, court records, we say so in the text and direct readers to the primary source rather than inventing a citation.

We separate description from advice. Much of our subject matter touches money, law, tax and health. Our standing rule, stated in our Terms of Use and repeated inside articles where it matters, is that we describe how systems work and never substitute for a licensed professional's counsel on an individual case. Where an article's subject creates any potential conflict of interest for its writer, we disclose it at the foot of the piece.

Accuracy has a hierarchy here. Facts that can be verified must be; figures that change frequently are described directionally with a pointer to the live official source, because a stale number dressed as a precise one misleads more politely but no less thoroughly. Quotations are never invented, composite characters are never presented as real people, and placeholder content in a template, this page's team listing included, is labelled as exactly that.

Corrections policy

When we get something wrong, we fix the article, note the correction at the foot of the piece with the date, and, where the error was material to the article's point, say plainly what we originally wrote. Errors of spelling or formatting are fixed silently. To report an error, write to [email protected] with the article's address and the correction requested; we respond to every substantiated report, and we would rather hear about a mistake twice than not at all.

Ownership and funding

Cyprus Pulse is privately owned by its founding team and has no ownership ties to any political party, government body, or other media organisation, in Cyprus or elsewhere.

The site is funded by advertising, principally through the Google AdSense programme, and may in future add sponsorship and reader support. Advertising is always visually distinguished from editorial content and labelled as advertising; advertisers have no access to, or influence over, editorial decisions, and no article on this site is ever written to please a specific advertiser. If we publish sponsored content in future, it will carry an unmistakable label on every format in which it appears. How we choose what to cover

Our test for commissioning a piece is usefulness over time. A story earns a place on Cyprus Pulse if a reader is likely to search for its subject a year from now: how a tax rule works, what a tenancy contract should contain, when to visit the Akamas, how the Green Line crossings function. Stories that are merely loud today and forgotten on Thursday generally do not make the cut, however tempting the traffic. When genuinely important news breaks, we cover it through the same lens, asking what a reader needs to understand rather than what they need to be told first.

We also maintain our published guides. Evergreen journalism decays quietly: a fee changes, a scheme closes, a ministry reorganises. Each guide on this site is reviewed on a rolling schedule, updated where the world has moved, and its revision reflected in the site map. Where an article describes figures that change frequently, our standing style is to describe the direction and point to the official source that holds the current number, a policy explained inside the articles themselves.

Technology and tools

We use software tools, including AI-assisted ones, for research support, transcription and copy-editing suggestions, the way every modern newsroom does. Judgement, structure, verification and final wording are human responsibilities and remain with the named editor of each piece. No article is published on this site without a person who can defend every sentence in it, and errors are owned by the editor, never attributed to a tool.
